Amplifying youth voices

The Action Mapping Project is an initiative to foreground the lived experiences, knowledge, and insight of youth. AMP host extracurricular opportunities at Tacoma high schools highlighting STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education. AMP's Community Mapping Mentors work to build studends technical and interpersonal skills using GIS and engagement activities.

AMP host sketch mapping sessions at middle and high schools all round Tacoma to collected data that reflect youth’s lived experiences and utilization of their neighborhoods. This data is compiled into youth maps to help inform decisions from policy makers and other community leaders.

Traditionally, these sketch mapping sessions are conducted with pen and paper in each classroom. With remote learning becoming more common, I built a prototype of the sketch mapping survey that can be taken digitally with facilitation with results compiled instantly in a database.
